NYC Media Lab/16 kicked off their summit, #NYCML16, at Columbia University. Jim Bankoff, Chairman and CEO of Vox Media, spoke to a young and inspired audience on how storytelling has been the cornerstone of all of Vox’s 8 media brands, which are read by more than 170MM unique monthly visitors (785MM total monthly content views, on and off platform).
Justin Hendrix, Executive Director of the NYC Media Lab, kept the day engaging as emcee and moderator. Much of the day focused around Virtual (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) and its technological momentum to achieve critical mass. There were 11 interactive workshops, spanning from hands-on technology demonstrations to educational and collaborative discussions, including Deep learning & Media and the use of 360 video in journalism.
Emily Bell, Founding Director of the Tow Center for Journalism at the Columbia University Journalism School, gave the closing keynote. Emily’s quick British wit and humor was amplified by her deep knowledge of the digital journalism ecosystem. Emily also serves as the chair of the Worlds Economic Forum’s Global Advisory Council on social media.
These top accelerator leaders @kagisobond @jakezim @AdaoraUdoji @justinhendrix and Ken Perlin, New York University Professor of Computer Science, joined together to discussed the future of VR in a panel “VR: The Next 3 Years”.
Is 2018 the year of VR? Maybe the 2020 U.S. Presidential Debates will be available in VR!

This year NYC Media Lab celebrates its sixth birthday. A public-private partnership seeded by the New York City Economic Development Corporation, NYC Media Lab is a consortium of participating universities including Columbia, NYU, The New School, CUNY, IESE, and the School of Visual Arts and Pratt Institute. Initially funded by a contribution from Time Warner Cable, NYC Media Lab is now supported by corporate sponsors and members from around the globe.
A welcome international partner, Taiwan Startup Stadium, was on site with 10+ startups demonstrating their ready to market products. The #TaiwanRocks Tour showcases some of Taiwanese’s best VR, IOT, and other mobile startup ready to bring their products to the globe.
